SEO, um, what is it you do again?

Important distinctions in Website Development Terminology:

Website Design:  The specific layout of the page(s) wanted, including pictures, logos, colours, fonts, and content. This is considered Graphic Design and is usually done in Photoshop or another professional drawing program.  Ideally there would be a separate mock-up for every page to go on the website.  It can also be as simple as a pencil/paper sketch with details written in, it all depends on how fussy you are about the final product.  Think of it as a site-map, where does it go after the main page?

Website Development: the actual programming of the website.  (this is your carpenter to the interior decorator…)  Time varies depending on the depth/design of the page.  This is taking a picture and making it a program that can be read by your browser so it can live online for the world to see.

Domain Name: you must purchase the name/online address of your website from a registry.  Technically you don’t NEED a domain name, but it is the way that human people tend to recognize a website.
For example, vancouver-seo.com or vanseo.ca, depending on what is available at the time.  There is a yearly fee usually around $10-15, renewed annually, if you go direct to the source.  We like GoDaddy because they have good support/service, but there are plenty out there.  You can also pay someone else to take care of  it if you don’t want to.

It is useful to own your own domain, or to make sure the owner is some-one who will not disappear or be hard to track down when it is time to renew the subscription.  If you don’t upkeep it, it goes back up for sale after a year and someone else can buy it.

Online Server/website hosting
:  The actual URL or physical address where it is stored. (the long line of numbers and letters that the computer recognizes) Usually a server somewhere, a computer that is never turned off and just lives to store peoples websites.  This can be a monthly or yearly fee depending on whether you buy space yourself or go through a company.  It can range anywhere from $6-$200/month, sometimes paid yearly.
